Were It All Started:

The Australian Labradoodle originated in 1989 in Melbourne Australia in answer to the need of the ( then) Royal Victorian Guide Dogs Association to provide a woman in Hawaii with a Guide Dog who would not affect her husband's allergies.

Royal Guide Dogs were already breeding Standard Poodles and Labrador Retrievers and decided to carry out an experiment by crossing one of their Poodles with one of their Labradors. From the resulting small litter of three fur samples of one of the puppies was a successful match with the woman's husband and had a temperament suited to Guiding. The puppy was named Sultan and went on to guide his mistress for ten plus years.

General Appearance:

At first glance the Australian labradoodle should immediately impress as an athletic and sound animal with an expression which exemplifies his intuitive intelligent nature and his connected ness to human beings and his trainability. He craves close human companionship. This highly intelligent utilitarian breed is distinguished by two coat types, either curly or wavy; a sculptured face and head of considerable breadth and well proportioned streamlines conformation which suggests athleticism and fleet footed movement. His tail is constantly waving and his eyes seek human contact and appear to look deep into your soul rather than looking 'at' you.

The Australian labradoodle gives an indelible impression of a comical clown like sprit, gentleness and soundness and should give the same impression whether of Standard, Medium or Miniature size. He is always ready for a game is eager for training and is a patient baby sitter or Therapy companion for the sick.

Endorsing the founders of the ASD Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard as this is the only true standard set that is consistent, remaining true to the characteristics of the breed since it began in 1989.
Proportion - Off square; slightly longer than tall when measured from prosternum to rear most point of the buttocks, and from withers to ground.

Substance - Strong medium density bone, neither spindly nor coarse, well developed musculature, neither refined nor coarse, and a streamlined body mass suitable for the demands of his work.

Head - An essential characteristic; neither snipey nor ponderous, distinctively broad with blunt muzzle, well proportioned and with exceptional breadth of top skull and deep muzzle.

Expression - An essential characteristic; softly and eagerly seeking human eye contact, calm , joyful, friendly, with a glint of fun and mischief.

Eyes - Medium to large in size, lustrous and set well apart with a sweet lively expression. Oval preferred over round. Neither prominent nor sunken. Harsh or stern starting expression highly objectionable. Bulging eyes highly undesirable. Eye color in a range of shades from transparent hazel to brown but must correspond with coat color. Eye rims fully pigmented with either Black or Rose, broken pigment a serious fault. Haws are not apparent.

Ears- Long and coated, and set slightly above the line of the eye. Leather should not be thick or fleshy and is fairly long, reaching the point of the nose when pulled forward. Coat will be longer than the leather. The ears are held nicely against the head and should be clipped short on the underside to permit maximum air flow.

Skull - Broad and slightly rounded. In profile, it is slightly longer than the muzzle, and should have a pronounced occiput and stop. It should not be domed. The forehead is prominent, and is slightly sculptured with a central furrow, extending two-thirds of the distance from stop to occiput. The occiput is well defined.

Stop - Well defined.

Muzzle - Substantial with good depth of under jaw.

Jaws - Strong and neither over nor undershot.

Nose - A distinct feature and must be broad, rounded, soft and fleshy with no pointed appearance. Fully pigmented; butterfly noses or broken pigment are a serious fault. Pigment to be Black or Rose but always strong in color.

Lips - Firm fitting, hiding teeth; no flew

Bite - Scissors Bite. Level bite should not be heavily penalized in an otherwise outstanding individual.

Teeth - Not visible when the mouth is closed. Discolored teeth, tarter or inflamed gums to be heavily penalized.

Neck, Top line, Body:

Neck - Moderately long, never short or stumpy, Strongly muscled and curving elegantly into the lay of the shoulder,; moderately arched; no dewlap; clean throat.

Top line - Level and firm. Dippy back and pronounced sloping from the loins to set of tail to be penalized.

Body - Chest is moderately broad with muscling sweeping downwards into the forearms. Never stocky but not unduly narrow. Reaching down to the elbow but not below it. Ribs are long and well sprung to provide optimum lung capacity. Abdomen sloping upwards from behind the elbow into a graceful and moderate tuck up of the loins. Back is moderately broad and well muscled and the spine should not be able to be felt through the coat or muscles. Loin is short with a slight upwards slope and meets the croup smoothly. Croup is well formed and only slightly inclined with hip bones hardly apparent.

Tail - Thick at the base and tapering; set on slightly below the line of the back; the tip of the bone should reach just below the hock but plumage may make it appear to be longer. When the dog is excited or in motion, the tip of the tail may be held gaily above the backline but the root must not be high set; when at rest the tail hangs in a graceful saber shape. It must not have kinks or be in a ring. The tail should be an indicator of the happy and joyful nature of the dog.

Hindquarters - Long , graceful and powerful; well balanced with the front assembly with well angulated stifles and short hocks vertical to the ground. Legs, viewed from the rear, are parallel to each other, straight and very strongly muscled in upper and lower thighs. Buttocks are well developed. Tendons and hocks are strong. metatarsus long, no dewclaws. Feet similar in all respects to forefeet.

Coat - There are two varieties of coat; both are single coats and a dense double coat is a fault.

Curly Wool - Tight cylindrical curls; similar to the Poodle. May be presented clipped to an even length all over. The underside of the ear leather should be clipped short to allow maximum air flow. The under jaw and beneath the throat should be clipped and the beard rounded off; the head and ears are moderately trimmed for sanitary reasons. Feet to be clipped in  such a way that the coat covers the clipped area to create the impression that no clipping has been done. Must not be clipped like a Poodle. Discoloring of the coat through the bleaching of the sun must not be penalized under any circumstances. Long Puffed up over - groomed coats to be heavily penalized.

Fleece Wavy or Curly - An even length overall including legs and body; falling gently in waves , not curls; must ripple and swing as the dog gaits. The underside of the ear leather should be clipped short to allow maximum air flow. The under jaw and beneath the throat should be clipped and the beard trimmed short and rounded and the head and ears moderately trimmed for sanitary reasons. Feet to be clipped in such a way that the coat covers the clipped area to create the impression that no clipping has been done. Must not be clipped like a poodle. Color should be balanced over the body of the coat ideally fifty percent white, fifty percent colored as per other solid breed colors. Flecks or Freckling of the solid color in the white of the coat is not encouraged but is acceptable. Abstract (less than fifty percent distribution of color) is not a penalty but is not preferred. Merle Colors are a definite fault and should be penalized and bred away from. Pink or butterfly nose is a definite fault and any dog displaying a pink nose will not be registered with the AALB.
Phantom - Solid body color with defined markings of a second color as follows: The chest and throat or a chin and fore chest pattern, second color on the sides of the muzzle/cheek and above each eye, the underside of the ears, second coloring on the feet preferably up the legs, and below the tail in a diamond shape. Inside the flank and leg of the second color is also acceptable. Any of the solid colors combination is acceptable.
